"The West African giants went through a period of mediocrity in the competition in the mid-1980s to late-1990s. During that period they were eliminated in the group stages, while they failed to qualify for the finals altogether on three attempts."
So the 1992 AFCON final match between Ghana and Ivory Coast in Senegal (with all the penalty shoot-out drama) doesn't even count? In 1996 (South Africa), we were eliminated at the semi-final stage by South Africa. In 1994 (Tunisia), we were eliminated by Ivory Coast at the quarter-final stage.

Good article and allow me to add this, couple of players such as Wakaso and Adomah continue to prove their worth in the squad. To me, these two would be seen more in the tournament and may be the shinning stars in the tournament. Yes, Kwedwo Asamoah, Atsu, and Asamoah Gyan are now seen as our best, like it happened at the AFCON 2012 when unexpected players like John Boye and Massawudu Alhassan's performances stood taller than most of the players we thought were going to do better, Wakaso Mubarak and Adomah, I see, are going to replicate such a result. For they have performed so well in the two friendlies they took part.
Wakaso, for example, I'm still trying to figure out how his free kicks loop perfectly to connect with our players to head home. He has done that for twice now and both resulted well. Adomah, on the other hand, with his speed, and his ability in running past his marker, the team is going to benefit from that during counter attacks and offside trap beating.
