Have you forgotten the large number of young men that were sent to Cuba, Libya, and Eastern Europe for Commando training in the 1980s and 90s. These guys were given all sorts of weapons. When the CDRs and commando groups became redundant after the return to civilized governance many of these young men are jobless and destitute. Some sold off their guns to survive and others are using the pistols and assault rifles for robbery. That is where the guns are from. Unaccounted for irresponsibly issued state owned weaponry is one of the major reasons for gun crime in Ghana.

All the difficulties facing Ghanians today can be summed up as follows - "we have lost our path". Which path? The path where happiness can be found and lived.
The path to happiness starts first with the MOST IMPORTANT pursuit - - - Peace of Mind.
Peace of mind is the assurance that you can sleep without keeping an eye open. Peace of mind is the assurance that the land you bought can never be taken away by a chief. Peace of mind is the assurance that your child receive equal opportunity to the school of his/her choice. Peace of mind is the assurance that when you fall ill, you would be taken care of.
The significance of a peaceful mind is crucial to any other pursuit. This simple and yet illusive element can be found in the most happiest countries in the world - Norway, Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands... see Forbes list of the most happiest countries.
Before writing all the hateful comments, consider the following:
1. In all the above countries, the presidents or prime ministers all drive to work on bicycles. 2. In all the above countries, the constitution protects citizens and visitors equally. 3. Education is the most invested sector in all these countries. Please find the time to learn about what they do different and what we can adopt.
Are we a happy nation? if you believe that Ghana is a happy country, then you don't have to worry about any of these topics - armed robbery, domestic violence and institutional violence; collectively they are referred to as mental health. And for God sake, mental health is NOT jimi-jimi BUT describes a level of psychological well-being.
Can a nation achieve happiness across board? The wise man is an informed man or for the biblical version - for lack of knowledge my people perish. THE ONLY SOLUTION TO ALL OF GHANA'S PROBLEMS, CONCERNS, and DESIRES both individually and nationally is to be found in EDUCATION. Not JSS or SSS or University. NO! That is part of the problem!
National EDUCATION centering around READING, WRITING and SPEAKING. Building on this to include - POLITICS, GEOGRAPHY, CULTURE, SOCIAL, LEGAL and HEALTH.
The educated Ghanaian will then be capable of making an informed decision.
1. To choose clean water over giving lands to mercury-polluting gold companies
2. To choose natural bio-farming over genetically-modified and pesticide-based farming
3. To choose to protect everyone over gated-communities and communal violence
4. To choose life over death
5. To choose to give everyone the most basic things - clean water, shelter and food
6. To choose moderation over excesses
7. To choose legal consequences over inaction
8. To choose to work over prayer camps
9. To choose KNOWLEDGE over ILLITERACY
10. To consider the merits and de-merits of joining the UN, ECOWAS, AU and so forth.
I conclude with the following quote: God has not given us a spirit of FEAR but of LOVE and POWER and PEACE OF MIND and by WISDOM is a house built (Proverbs 24:3-6)

A man stands on a podium and promises you and 50,000 other people electricity, clean water, tarred roads... and 1 million other promises, if you vote for him as a member of parliament. Another man with a cheap t-shirt and a megaphone also asks you to vote for him and he promises to make sure that he works for you in parliament. Now who would you vote for?
I agree with Nana that Education is the key. If you and I understand exactly what an MP does, from being educated on the constitution and politics. An MP's first and last job in parliament is to represent the area and contribute to the drawing up of LAWS. Nothing MORE, nothing LESS. If we are knowledgeable about this fact, you and I can better elect the right person.
Say, you are robbed and you are not hurt, will you go to the police? It's not likely. When you are educated in social and anti-social protocols, we might be inclined to go to the police even when we have not been hurt. Why?
An educated police force would be able to analyse 1. where the robbers are operating 2. what times they rob people 3. what languages they spoke 4. where they violent 5. what weapons are they using 6. what are their modes of transportation 7. have the attack caused you more stress 8. have the attack created mistrust 9. what people are most likely to be robbed
You see, there are many things that BOTH an EDUCATED citizen and an EDUCATED civil service can do for each other.

I felt safe during my visit there and I wouldn't think twice about going to visit again. Perhaps, you should visit there yourself instead of paying attention to filtered news.
