I agree with the author of this article. In Ghana our major problem is money. Those fancy LPG stoves and electric stoves are not affordable commodities in many Ghanaian homes, in the villages or some of our major cities. So the problem of resolving indoor pollution should be tackled from another perspective: ventilation.
Ghana is no longer a primitive economy. Modernity should be part of our psyche. Houses designed with poor ventilation system should not pass inspection for tenement. Tenants of such houses who use coal pot or wood-burning stove to cook indoors expose themselves and their neighbors to inhalation of toxic fumes from the burning process of the coal or wood.
If the inhalation of toxic fumes from indoor pollution was the only problem, many Ghanaians can deal with it because we are used to that nuisance as a norm in poorer homes.
But the real threat to tenants is the possibility of fire which can burn down several houses and their occupants in matter of minutes.
