Would the outrage have been so great if they were handing out free condoms for men?
Why does it always have to be about politics?
Women constitute half the human race! So, solve the problem with this solution: Go read the article 3 March 2014 in BBC World Service titled: "The Indian sanitary pad revolutionary" (Just cut and paste the article name in your search engine.) Invite Muruganatham to Ghana (he wants to expand to other countries). One of his relatively inexpensive machines can employ 10 women and make sanitary pads for 3,000 women at 1/3 the cost of buying pads from the multinationals. And, it's a woman to woman business. I think there is a YouTube also on Menstrual Man. Sanitary Pads are an important issue. Solving through World Bank loan not the solution. But, the problem definitely needs attention and not just for the poor who are intellectually gifted or economically poor, but socially connected. Keep problem-solving and GO READ AND WATCH. (I bet there are other females who would welcome the option of cheaper pads.) And, while we are on the topic, why not more toilets, even if they are pit toilets, with locks, solar lights (with a wire cage over the solar panel so it can't be easily stolen), and waterless hand soap? Hygiene needs to be encouraged and women need to feel safe in taking care of these intimate needs.
Just because you may not live in a rural area doesn't mean the whole of Ghana should center on middle class living in urban areas.
There are so many problems and the government is bankrupt, so let's start thinking of ways to solve some of our problems ourselves.

I think Ghana is in the hands of stupid people who call themselves a government (NDC). I do not think it is sensible to solicit for a loan to buy pads for school girls. That loan should rather be used to establish companies where the unemployed can get their daily bread. In fact, if I may ask, have the parents of these school girls complained that they cannot take care of their children? The notorious NDC should answer this? Any person or group of people who misuse the country's money foolishly will NEVER go unpunished. SHAMEFUL NDC. IS THAT THE WAY YOU ARE GOVERNING GHANA AFTER STEALING THE PEOPLE'S MANDATE? THIS IS SHEER STUPIDITY AND MISPLACEMENT OF PRIORITIES. OH GOD, HELP GHANA AND DELIVER US FROM THE HANDS OF THESE VAMPIRES WHO HAVE COME TO KILL, TO STEAL AND TO DESTROY OUR DEAR COUNTRY.

Is it not a shame for people like Akoto ,Dr Edward Mahama (double shame because he is suppossed to know better as an obstetrician gynaecologist) to descend to such low levels.
I thought such talk should be left to serial callers. Dr Mahama a little search in Pubmed, the WHO website, websites dealing with reproductive and adolescent health would have given you solid grounds to make the assertions you have made.
Rather you decided to play the politician in you and in the end are a disappointment to some of us who were your students. Where are the gender activists, those who claim they talk for the girl child.
Where is Bright Appiah and his child rights organization because most of the girls going to be affected by this brouhaha are girls below 18 years of age.
what are the solutions to issues of menstrual hygiene in the schools. Mahama offers non, Akoto, the same since their children will not be affected.
If communities are economically empowered to provide their own needs nobody will talk of pads to school children.
It is a pity that some sense of desperation has taken hold of us as a country. The holier than thou attitude is killing us, when you for example get a member of POTAG who has been fleecing students to buy his pamphlets illegally pointing fingers at corrupt officials when he the teacher is deeply a petty thief.
A nation of corrupt citizens can only form corrupt govts because the ministers and all were brought up in the same environment like the rest of us. Parliamentarians, opposition party leaders etc did not originate from the moon or jupiter, they are from Ghana like the rest of us.
Whoever says he is not guilty should cast the first stone and yet we claim we are christians and moslems.
We are only church goers and the Lord in his infinite wisdom has decided to watch us not use our brains to develop.
The traditional gods would have struck half of parliament and ministers dead if it came to probity and accountability.
Dr MAHAMA please come again

Can Spencer Quaye of Inside Ghana show by research, facts and figures the weight of the lack of sanitary pad's contribution to student absenteeism of the adolescent girl child vis-à-vis forced child marriages, violence against the girl child, poverty, inimical traditional practices such as Trokosi, teenage pregnancy, etc, etc.
It's all well and good to engage in political posturing, however, it's critically important that, in seeking to achieve the development goals and ensure that, no Ghanaian is left behind in our quest to create an educated society with each contributing his or her quota to our strategic national development goals and interests, we stay true to the facts and engage intellectually, and think deeply to come out with the best possible solutions that serves our long term interests. This is not to discount the structural and motivational influences that comes into play in addressing the holistic and complete education of the adolescent girl-child and boy.
The issue of sanitary pads distribution was an ill thought through intervention that clearly is not standing the test of critical scrutiny. Going forward, we can do better and we should be seen to be doing better.

Is this another 'yengyendi' contract(lets share amongst ourselves). What is this NDC Government driving at? Can't this supposed group understand that the supposed pad distribution to girls makes a negligible contribution to facilitate their academic prowess. What the schools in Ghana need are qualified teachers, well ventilated and lighted classrooms, good food, good dormitories, good running water, mowers to mow the lawns instead of students physically weeding and exerting all their energies on none academic stuff. Wake up so called group. If a good foundation is not built for Mother Ghana by educating our children, the end result will be the arm robbers and massive unemployment rate in the country. All because the country lacks the brain power to create wealth due to lack of employment.
