The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Yohane Amarh Ashitey, was the toast of the people of Tema on Tuesday, after he emerged from a meeting with security chiefs at the TMA to announce a decision to probe and bring to justice, perpetrators of the shooting incident that cost two lives during this year’s Kpeledzoo festival procession.

At the Kpeledzoo Tsoshishi in Tema Manhean, the MCE was given a standing ovation and mobbed after he announced that an investigation was commencing into the incident.

“We are commencing investigations and I want to assure all of us that whoever the perpetrators are, justice will be done.”

He said to wild applause from a crowd of mostly indigenes who had convened to hear about the outcome of the MCE’s meeting. The meeting had been between the MCE and the Military High Command led by Rear Admiral Issah Yakubu.

Also, in the meeting which had been held behind closed doors at the Assembly were representatives from the Tema Traditional Council (TTC).

According to the MCE, the consensus was that an investigation would be carried out to ascertain the circumstances under which the shooters pulled the trigger, and that whoever is found culpable will not be spared.

It would be recalled that during a procession in front of the Tema Naval Base as part of this year’s Kpeledzoo festival, some Naval personnel had shot into the crowd on the procession, killing two and others sustained injury.

Media reports have claimed that the Naval Officers had shot at the crowd in response to the fact that they were being pelted with broken bottles by some people in the crowd on the procession. However, this has been disputed.

After meeting with the military high command and members of the Tema Traditional Council, the MCE emerged from the meeting in the company of the Tema East New Patriotic Party Chairman, Nene OfoeTeye-chu Agbadiagba lV, and met with the people and announced the decision to probe and punish the culpable.

“I use this opportunity to also announce that we will help the bereaved families to give befitting burials to their fallen loved ones,” the MCE announced to wild applause, with some members of the crowd rushing forward to mob him.

He also said, there had been a consideration of what can be done to end the recurrence of such bloody incidents recalling that there had been similar bloody clashes between the people and members of the security services in 1976 and 2010.

After answering questions to the admiration of the many Kpeledzoo youth in attendance, the MCE was applauded for his unique fighting spirit against injustice. The youth chanted war songs with shouts of “Yohane is our next MP”.

Speaker after speaker was full of praise for the MCE and the Regional Minister for their show of love for the bereaved families and the people of Tema in general.

On his part, Nene Ofoe Teye-chu Agbadiagba IV assured the people that the government of president Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia are very concerned about the incident and are prepared to shepherd a process to bring a just closure to the incident.

“I can tell you that since the incident, brilliant Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has been regularly checking up to ensure that justice is done,” Nene Ofoe Teye-chu Agbadiagba IV said to thunderous applause.
